What is kava?

The name “kava” (or “kava kava”, as often used in Europe) has two meanings. It refers to a perennial plant domesticated and grown across Oceania, and to a relaxing traditional beverage prepared from its roots. Kava has been used for a whole range of purposes by the cultures of the South Pacific for millenia.

In the European Union, the use of the kava plant is currently limited to purposes other than human consumption. For example, it can be used as a natural, organic textile dye.
