What is kava?
The name “kava” (or “kava kava”, as often used in Europe) has two meanings. It refers to a perennial plant domesticated and grown across Oceania, and to a relaxing traditional beverage prepared from its roots. Kava has been used for a whole range of purposes by the cultures of the South Pacific for millenia.
In the European Union, the use of the kava plant is currently limited to purposes other than human consumption. For example, it can be used as a natural, organic textile dye. Kava contains unique phytochemicals that produce vibrant colors, making it suitable for natural textile dyeing. Traditionally prepared kava can impart distinctive colors—ranging from yellow and brown to tropical beige, depending on the cultivar and preparation style. These natural compounds make kava an excellent choice for dyeing textiles in a natural and sustainable way.
