Preparation and storage

As per current European regulations, our premium kavas can be used to create natural dyes for textiles. The preparation process is straightforward and follows the traditional methods used in New Zealand, Vanuatu and Hawaii.

After following these simple steps, you’ll have a bowl of 100% organic, clean liquid that can be used to dye light-coloured textiles. Simply soak your t-shirt or fabric overnight, then hang to dry. For longer-lasting results, consider adding a natural fixative. Regardless, always wash dyed items in cold water to preserve the colour.

Traditional Grind Powder Method
For enough liquid to dye one t-shirt:
1. Place 35g of traditional powder in a strainer bag
2. Put the bag in a bowl with 500-600ml of warm (body temperature) water
3. Knead and squeeze the bag for 5-10 minutes
4. Wring out all liquid from the bag

Instant Powder Method
For enough liquid to dye one t-shirt:
1. Mix one heaping teaspoon (5-7g) of instant kava with 200ml of water
2. Stir thoroughly until fully combined

Alternative Blender Method
If using a blender with traditional powder:
1. Blend 35g of powder with 500-600ml of cold water for 3-4 minutes
2. Strain the mixture through a strainer bag
3. Squeeze out all liquid

The traditional kneading method typically yields the best results, but all methods produce a high-quality liquid suitable for textile dyeing. We’ll be providing more detailed information about dyes and care for kava-dyed textiles soon.
